Encountered difficulties
Rainbow Six Siege was a game I never played. So I didn't know the basic rules and the elements that compose a hostage level.
Creation process and iterations
Research and note-taking
I started by a wed research to find ressources that can give me informations on the existing maps of the game.
I conclued there were three rules I had to follow.
1. Make sure each rooms are interconnected.
2. Provide access all around and at all levels of the building.
3. Put a lot of dedstructible walls.
Try the game
I played the game several times to get a better idea of the content of a map like this.
At first, it was only observation to validate the points indicated above.
Then, I played to better understand the experience and the feel of the game.
Apply my observations to the blueprints
Finaly, I draw the blueprints of the house and places the different elements one after the other.
- Identify doors and windows with one color.
- Add destructible walls.
- Place the hatches.
- Add possible locations for the hostage.
Conclusion
Thanks to this work, I have learned several important things for a level designer.
When you start working on a game in production or that is already released, it is important to be well-informed to keep the essence of the game intact.
The experience, the gameplay, the emotions or the story are integral parts of the game. Being in harmony with these aspects is essential.
I therefore consider it crucial to read the documentation, discuss with colleagues or do research on the project to ensure consistency within the game.
